Senior News Editor

Company: CapRadio
Location: Sacramento, CA
Compensation: $85,000
Apply by: https://capradio.recruitee.com/o/senior-editor-of-
Website: http://capradio.org

Description: Department: Content/News
Status: Full-time, Exempt
End Date: Open Until Filled

Summary

CapRadio is hiring a new Senior Editor of News, and we’re looking for candidates who are:

  • Strategic thinkers and organized managers. We want an editor who believes in front-end editing, communicates gently but effectively and a track record of executing high-impact journalism projects.
  • Mindful collaborators. The Senior Editor should meet their colleagues with humanity and have experience supporting a talented team of reporters.
  • Smart audio journalists. Are you passionate about broadcast radio and podcasts, but also someone who puts all news platforms on equal footing? Then you’ll work well with our journalists.
  • Thinking about news via an equity lens. It’s not enough to throw “sunshine” on issues. We want an editor with instincts to investigate — and dismantle — systemic inequities across class, race, gender identity, geography and age.
  • Excited about Sacramento. We’re an ambitious, inclusive, growing public-media organization that’s building a new headquarters and events center in the heart of California’s capital. We need an editor who will embrace our bold future and put this community first.

Our hiring committee is focusing on candidates with previous editor and team-management experience. We’d prefer someone with an audio background, but if your experience is from prints, digital or a different platform, don’t let that deter you from inquiring or applying. We can support the right candidate’s transition to our multiplatform newsroom.

The majority of the Senior Editor’s time will be spent on enterprise journalism: features, investigations, community-powered reporting, and participatory-journalism projects — maybe even a podcast. But there will be a focus on daily news, especially during breaking news moments.

Importantly, we need an editor whose instincts are to ask questions such as: Who is not included in this story but should be? Am I overlooking equity issues? What audiences need this information and how can we best serve them?

We want to deliver for audiences who have historically been ignored by news organizations and public media. We also encourage BIPOC journalists to apply for this position; you will be supported at CapRadio.

CapRadio’s journalism reaches millions of Californians, including via our statewide network of more than five dozen public-media frequencies and websites. Sometimes our work also appears on NPR or NPR.org. Recently, we’ve won statewide and national awards for breaking news, podcasts, digital journalism and more.
In conclusion: This is a unique opportunity to join an expanding media company and a demanding but reflective, empathetic news team. You’ll be a leader on top projects and a trustworthy voice among co-workers who value inclusivity and collaboration.

We’re focused on building a diverse and inclusive organization and it takes all kinds of people so if you’re excited about this role but don’t meet all of the qualifications listed below, we encourage you to apply.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assigns and edits stories for daily news
  • Plans, develops and edits feature-length stories and high-impact projects in a timely manner
  • Collaborates with Managing Editor, News on big picture and anchor projects
  • Delivers daily and feature stories, including two-way interviews, digital content and appearances on CapRadio and NPR “talk” programs as needed
  • Ensures that all products meet required and accepted format and content standards
  • Supervises a team of reporters
  • Collaborates and communicates with NPR and other national outlets as needed
  • Leads effective newsroom meetings on a regular basis

Qualifications/Experience:

  • College degree, preferably in journalism, or equivalent experience
  • Several years of newsroom experience, preferably as an editor (radio/audio experience a plus)
  • Strong management skills
  • A passion for public radio news and programming
  • High-level news judgment
